Throughout the year, the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce recognizes outstanding companies and individuals through various awards and recognition programs. Awards include the South Carolina Manufacturer of the Year, Human Resources Professional of the Year, Excellence in Workplace Diversity Awards, Safety Awards, and the Best Places to Work in South Carolina.
In addition, the South Carolina Chamber recognizes and honors South Carolina’s Business Leader of the Year, Public Servant of the Year, and Sgt. William Jasper Freedom Award. And, in partnership with The Capital Corporation, the Chamber recognizes South Carolina’s 25 Fastest-Growing Companies. The awards process varies for each award so please read below or e-mail Tish Anderson, associate vice president of programs and events, for additional information.
The South Carolina Manufacturer of the Year award is given each year to one manufacturer in each of the three categories: small, medium and large. Manufacturers are selected based on strong economic impact, quality and environmental improvement, a commitment to the workforce, and involvement and contributions to their communities. The 2011 Small Manufacturer of the Year (based in SC) was Cox Industries, located in Orangeburg. The Small Manufacturer of the Year (based outside of SC) was PPG Industries Fiber Glass Products Inc., located in Chester. The 2011 Medium Manufacturer of the Year was Pure Power Technologies, based in Columbia and the Large Manufacturer of the Year was Honda of South Carolina Mfg., Inc., located in Timmonsville. The Chamber’s Diversity Council recognizes each year the state’s top companies in the field of diversity with the Excellence in Workplace Diversity Award. The awards are distributed in three categories (small, medium, large) based on the number of employees. Companies will be judged on diversity initiatives, effectiveness and applicability/replicability. View the 2011 nominees and winners.

The South Carolina Chamber, Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), SC State Council and the publishers of the SCBIZ join each year to produce the Best Places to Work in South Carolina program. This initiative is dedicated to identifying and recognizing South Carolina’s most innovative and top-notch employers. Those companies selected as “Best Places to Work” will be recognized and honored during a reception and dinner. View the 2011 Best Places to Work in South Carolina companies and rankings. The award is open to all South Carolina for-profit and not-for-profit organizations with at least 15 employees working in South Carolina. Apply online by clicking on “Program Registration,” and complete the information before May 25. Upon completion of the assessment process, all participating companies will receive an Employee Feedback Report, which details the results of their specific survey. Similar reports can cost thousands of dollars if initiated independently. Winners will be contacted in early August.

The Annual Summit, the Chamber’s annual meeting, is held each November. During the event, several individuals are recognized including South Carolina’s Business Leader of the Year, the Public Servant of the Year and the Sgt. William Jasper Freedom Award recipient. More information will be available in August 2012. The event will be held at Wild Dunes Resort.
Do you know a peer, client or co-worker who is a model human resources professional? Each year, the Chamber and South Carolina SHRM State Council recognize the state’s top human resources professional. The award is given to an individual in the human resources field who has made significant contributions to both their organization and the community. All nominees are honored during the reception and dinner held annually in February. The evening culminates with the announcement of the Human Resources Professional of the Year. Congratulations to the 2012 Human Resources Professional of the Year, Steve Nail, Hubbell Lighting. Information regarding the 2013 event and award will be announced by November 2012.
The Safety Awards are presented annually based on companies achieving a commendable lost workday case rate during the previous calendar year. The Chamber honors those companies who make workplace safety a priority with a luncheon in March. The 2012 Safety Awards luncheon was held March 14, 2012 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Columbia. Safety Award winners represent companies across South Carolina that have made workplace safety a priority. The Safety Awards are given based on companies achieving a commendable lost workday case rate during 2011. View the 2012 winners. Information regarding the 2013 event and awards will be announced by January 2013.
