Gov. Nikki Haley is teaming up with University of South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley to collect school supplies for teachers and shoes for second-grade students in eight rural S.C. counties.
Donations will be accepted in July at Department of Motor Vehicles locations across the state.
The school supplies will go to teachers in some of the poorest counties in the state — Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Clarendon, Dillon, Marlboro, Marion and Union.
Teachers in those schools are spending between $500 to $1000 each out of pocket to buy supplies for their classroom, Haley said. They also have to ask students to bring supplies to school, the governor said.
Staley’s organization, Innersole, also will collect sneakers at the Motor Vehicles locations.
“This is us partnering with the coolest coach ever,” Haley said, adding, “She’s more than just the coach for the University of South Carolina, she is South Carolina’s coach.”
Each student that receives a pair of shoes will be a part of a yearlong “Educate My Sole” program, emphasizing class attendance, behavior, physical fitness and reading. “We look forward to impacting lives of our young people every single day at a crucial age of their life,” Staley said.
Last year, Haley’s Original Six Foundation collected more than 20,000 books for rural libraries, she said.
