COLUMBIA, South Carolina — Different plans to get more money to South Carolina roads are now on the floor of the House and Senate, but there are still plenty of roadblocks.
The House Ways and Means Committee passed its road funding bill Thursday. The plan lowers the state's gas tax and increases the sales tax on fuel, raising an additional $400 million for roads. It also includes Department of Transportation reform and an income tax cut.
The Senate Finance Committee passed its own plan Wednesday to raise even more money through a gas tax increase and raising fees for driver's licenses and car tags.
Looming over both bills is a threatened veto by Gov. Nikki Haley. She thinks the Senate plan raises taxes too much and the House's income tax cut is too small.
