KEY VOTE ALERT: State Chamber Will Score H. 3147
April 12, 2016
COLUMBIA, S.C. –The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce today issued the following Key Vote letter to members of the South Carolina Senate regarding H.3147, a bill originally intended to phase out the state income tax liability on military retirement benefits. The State Chamber supports passage of this legislation and this vote will be scored on the Chamber’s annual Legislative Scorecard.
Ted Pitts, S.C. Chamber President said, “Exempting income taxes on military retiree benefits will bring more military retirees to South Carolina, bolstering our state’s workforce. Most military retirees embark on a second career upon leaving the service. Those who serve our country possess traits and skills that South Carolina companies need. At a time when South Carolina is focused on closing its skills gap and providing businesses with a talented workforce, this legislation will move us in the right direction toward building a skilled workforce while remaining one of the most military friendly states in the country.”

RE: H.3147 – Income Tax on Military Retirement (Support)
The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce supports passage of H.3147, a bill originally intended to phase out the state income tax liability on military retirement benefits.
South Carolina’s military community is one of the strongest in the nation, but we are at a competitive disadvantage to more than a dozen states that have eliminated state income taxes on military retirement. This bill not only provides tax relief for the men and women who have served our country, but also encourages active and retired military individuals to call South Carolina home. Beyond active duty, military retirees can capitalize on their unique skills and leadership qualities while boosting our state’s workforce.
Please note that the Chamber will score your vote on H.3147 in the 2016 Legislative Scorecard.
