Goal
The SC HBCU STEM program will help build a partnership between SC’s HBCU institutions, their students and South Carolina industry. The program will connect students interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related careers with diverse types of STEM careers available in South Carolina. This program will offer a select group of students a unique opportunity to interact, learn from and work with South Carolina companies and business leaders that are in STEM related fields.
Concept
The program will consist of 25 students selected from rising Juniors or Seniors at South Carolina’s four-year HBCU institutions (Allen University, Benedict College, Claflin University, Clinton College, Morris College, South Carolina State University and Voorhees College). Two students per school will be selected from the seven (7) HBCU institutions based on their academic performance and the remaining eleven (11) students selected by application process. The program covers the two semesters (fall and spring) of a students’ junior year with a paid summer internship. The curriculum consists of one site visits per month and supplemented with other project work and engagement opportunities. Site visits would be to partnering businesses who introduce students to STEM related careers.
